Moni Power Station

Home / Generation / Power Plant Capacity / Moni Power Station

The Vasilikos Power Station is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in Cyprus. The importance of this key infrastructure project is closely intertwined with the broader economic development of Cyprus. The Station is a high-tech project and consists of:

  • Three conventional power generation units of 130 MW each using fuel oil, in which Anti-Pollution Technologies systems have been installed to reduce emissions of Sulfur Dioxide, Nitrogen Oxides and Dust with the aim of reducing the above emissions below the limits set by the European Directive on Large Combustion Plants.
  • One 38 MW gas turbine using diesel fuel.
  • Two 220 MW combined cycle units each using diesel fuel and the possibility of converting them to use natural gas as fuel. The Authority has implemented all the necessary modifications to the Vasilikos Units and has proceeded with the installation of all the necessary infrastructure for the combustion of Natural Gas.
  • The Construction Contract for the 6th Unit with a capacity of 160 MW has been awarded. The Unit will be a combined cycle unit with a similar layout as Combined Cycle Units 4 & 5, and is expected to be delivered for commercial operation in May 2026.

On July 11, 2011, due to the explosion at the naval base in Mari, the Vassilikos power station, adjacent to the naval base, suffered extensive damage, resulting in the complete suspension of its activities. The station has been restored and is now fully operational.

The Vassilikos power station produces approximately 65% of the total electricity generated by the Authority’s Power Stations.

The thermal efficiency of the three conventional units for production units is 38% while for the MASK it is approximately 48%. Directive 2012/18/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 4 July 2012 on the control of major-accident hazards involving dangerous substances and amending and subsequently repealing Council Directive 96/82/EC requires the operator (EAC- Vassilikos Power Station) to prepare a relevant Safety Report. Vassilikos Power Station has prepared a Safety Report in accordance with the above European Directives in 2008-2009, which report was fully revised in 2019. The Vassilikos Power Station Major Accident Prevention Policy Manual presents the Cyprus Electricity Authority’s commitment to preventing major accidents and limiting their impacts, in order to ensure a high level of protection for humans and the environment.
