Today, Monday 26 July 2021, the EAC Board of Directors and Management welcomed the Minister of Energy, Commerce & Industry, Ms. Natasa Pilides, to Vasilikos Power Station. <\/p>\n
EAC Chairman Michalis Komodromos made a presentation to the Minister of the Authority’s current projects for installing modern environmental protection systems. These projects are being implemented in the context of EAC’s compliance with EU Directives and permitted emission levels, as determined by the operating licence issued by the Ministry of Labour. \u00a0Construction work on desulphurization and denitrification systems on steam units 1, 2 and 3 and the upgrading of the solids retention system in steam unit 3 have been completed and final checks are currently being made prior to their delivery to EAC. <\/p>\n
During her visit, the Minister of Energy was briefed on the major and complex projects that have already been implemented with regard to the use of natural gas for electricity generation. They concern additional equipment and the essential modifications to the Generation Units at Vasilikos Power Station. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The EAC Chairman also informed Ms. Pilides on the progress of work on the 160MW capacity Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Unit 6. This project includes the design, supply, installation, commissioning and initial operation of the unit, as well as a long-term gas turbine maintenance contract.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
In the course of her visit, the Ministry of Energy expressed her satisfaction with EAC’s adoption of environmentally friendlier policies and, at the same time, with the fact that it designs and implements projects that enable a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. As she stressed, the fast transition to a low-pollution economy is a challenge for organizations and businesses in Cyprus, including EAC, and she noted that the green economy is the only way forward for enterprises to become more productive and competitive, while promising a more sustainable future for the country’s citizens. The Ministry of Energy, Ms. Pilides added, has drawn up a multidimensional strategy for the achievement of this goal and is working on additional policies and measures aiming at climate neutrality in the context of the new, stricter regulations being promoted by the EU so that the green economy brings greater benefits to citizens, businesses and the country as a whole.\u00a0<\/p>\n
