The importance of this key infrastructure project is intertwined with the broader economic development of Cyprus. The station is a high-tech project and consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Three conventional power generation units of 130 MW each using fuel oil, in which anti-pollution technologies systems have been installed to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and dust with the aim of reducing these emissions below the limits set by the European Directive on Large Combustion Plants.<\/li>\n<li>One 38 MW gas turbine using diesel fuel.<\/li>\n<li>Two 220 MW combined cycle units each using diesel fuel and the possibility of converting them to use natural gas as fuel. The EAC has implemented all the necessary modifications to the Vasilikos Units and has proceeded with the installation of all the necessary infrastructure for the combustion of Natural Gas.<\/li>\n<li>Unit 6, which is under construction, will be a combined cycle unit with a similar layout as Combined Cycle Units 4 &amp; 5. It is expected to start commercial operation when natural gas becomes available at July 11, 2011, due to the explosion at the naval base in Mari, Vasilikos Power Station, adjacent to the naval base, suffered extensive damage, resulting in the complete suspension of its activities. The station has been restored and is now fully operational.<\/p>\n<p>Vasilikos Power Station produces approximately 66,4% \u200b\u200bof the total electricity generated by the EAC\u2019s power stations.<\/p>\n<p>The thermal efficiency of the three conventional units for production units is 38% while for the MASK it is approximately 48%. \u200b\u200bDirective 2012\/18\/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 04\/07\/2012 on the control of major-accident hazards involving dangerous substances and amending and subsequently repealing Council Directive 96\/82\/EC requires the operator (EAC- Vasilikos Power Station) to prepare a safety report.
